No Yay! So what if it's Women's Day?

Author : Sanjhi Rajgarhia | on 8th Mar 2009
No Yay! So what if it's Women's Day? International Women’s day is an occasion meant to celebrate the fairer sex as we are called. I guess in a society that has for long exploited yet disregarded the female species, its high time that they recognize what we’re about. The aspect being celebrated might differ though. Some appreciate the sacrificial mother who is a family’s support system, others appreciate the working woman and then there are the superhuman varieties that manage and succeed in both realms.

Dedicating a day to women does us no good. We still have to struggle against social pressures and stigmas. In many areas, life is still denied to the girl child. The rates of female feticide and infanticide seem to show no significant decline yet. Many of those permitted to live are denied education, those who are educated struggle to find equal opportunities and many-a-times, the freedom to pursue a career of their choice. Even amongst the most liberated of us, pressures of another kind always loom overhead. Men can get away with being as dark, fat, bald and ugly as they can possibly be. All women on the other hand are expected to be stunning. Those who aren’t are expected to spend hours primping themselves to look “presentable”. There are many such examples and the list is endless.

It could be said that Women’s Day is a part of the feminist movement as it focuses attention on the need to give due credit. When it was adopted by the United Nations as a part of their political and social strategy, it was a big step intended at facilitating equal human rights for women.

Yet, till we need a day to ‘celebrate’ us, we definitely haven’t arrived.

children's day is celebrated on nehru's bday, more to honour his memory and his love for children rather than to celebrate children.. women's day is more politically motivated.

We do celebrate Children's Day as well... I think we could look at Women's Day in a celebratory way as well. And probably the reason we don't have Men's Day is because there is nothing to celebrate there LoL!
